Spinbrush Kids - My Way Electric Toothbrush Review

Spinbrush Kids - My Way Electric Toothbrush
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was that time again. My girls were both complaining that they were sick of their toothbrushes. And, to be honest, they were probably due for a new one. So, off to Walmart we go.
Having a 5 and 6 year old always ensures that either my husband or I are going to have to help them with their teeth. There is no way they can be trusted to brush enough or to not spit out the big pieces of toothpaste and then continue to brush with the toothbrush and just a limited amount of water (and maybe a small amount of toothpaste still on it). But, when we looked in the toothbrush aisle, they fell in love with this toothbrush. And to be honest, so did I.
What's not to love? It is a My Way Spinbrush by Arm and Hammer. The spinbrush helps them brush better by having the brush circulate with the push of a button (or in this case a purple jewel that you push). And the fact that they can decorate it to fit their style and you have a true winner. Each of my girls had so much fun decorating them and then couldn't wait to use them. It comes with stickers that adhere well to the toothbrush, and include letters so they can put their name on it. I thought this might be just the novelty of a "new" toothbrush. But, we've had them for 4 days now and they still want to brush their teeth more now than ever. So, it's a win win for everyone.

Philips Sonicare Elite e9500 Custom Care Power Toothbrush Review

Philips Sonicare Elite e9500 Custom Care Power Toothbrush
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The only difference I can see between my new 9500 and the 7500/7300 models (about $20 cheaper if you can still find one) is that it comes with two different brush sizes. Replacement brushes are available in drug stores, Wal Marts, Target, and some grocery stores. It has two power settings. By default, it beeps at 30-second intervals and shuts off after two minutes so you can "do" your teeth by quadrants. All the "programmable timer" feature amounts to is the option of running for an extra 30-second interval, or turning the timer off entirely so that it's just on/off. The "easy start" feature, enabled out of the box, gradually increases power over the first fourteen brushings.
(August, 2006: Note that there is now a 9800 model with the same features as this one currently selling on Amazon for LESS. That is the one to get.)
My turn-of-the-century Sonicare would run a *good* two weeks on a charge with just me using it, and this one does too (more like three!). The instructions (then and now) say to leave it in the charger when not in use, but I always unplugged it to run the battery all the way down before re-charging; I think that's why it lasted so long. These have a good old fashioned nickel-cadmium battery and they only have so many charge cycles. I suspect the manufacturer doesn't want that getting around because their revenue stream would atrophy if everyone went this long before buying a replacement.
One nice thing about these new-generation Sonicares: smaller brushes and dramatically less splatter. The brush of my Y2K model looked like a standard manual toothbrush and some splatter was inevitable with that thing; I would remove my shirt or drape a towel over my shoulders to avoid getting festooned with micro-flecks of toothpaste. But not with this one! Plus, it hardly weighs anything at all; it's like holding a spoon.
My dentist turned me on and still recommends this brand today. (I brush for the whole two minutes and he recommends not doing that more than once per day and with a gentle, ordinary toothpaste as opposed to a whitener.) Money well spent --I haven't had a cavity in all those years. Never thought much about my gums, but they are nice & pink & clean & tight, like in the ad photos. Sonicare gives you 60 days to send it back if you don't like it.
Tip for newbies: Stand in the shower so that you don't splatter toothpaste all over the bathroom! Have fun! :-)

The Sonicare Elite 9500 Custom Care Power Toothbrush is built for your individual oral care needs. Just like a smile, no two mouths are the same. That's why the Sonicare Elite 9500 is designed with the new Custom Care System, offering two speeds and two brush head sizes for more individualized brushing. The Elite 9500 has patented sonic technology, high-speed bristle motion, and dynamic fluid cleaning action that gently and effectively reaches deep between teeth and below the gumline.
Sonicare is the only Sonic toothbrush with a slim angled neck, contoured-fit bristles and ultra high speed bristle speed for greater plaque removal in hard to reach areas. Plus, Sonicare is the #1 personally used and recommended brand by U. S. dental professionals.
Building better health into every Sonicare. The mouth is the gateway to your body. It is increasingly being identified as a vulnerable entry point for bacteria associated with serious medical conditions. Evidence also continues to emerge that shows a link between gum disease and a variety of systemic conditions, including diabetes, heart attack and stroke, and the occurrence of pre-term low birth weight babies. So it's essential that when you think of total body health you include your mouth by focusing on gum disease prevention.
Philips Oral Healthcare is dedicated to developing innovations that result in superior oral health and, therefore, can help improve and maintain overall health.
About Sonicare's Patented Technology and Custom Care System Sonicare's unique patented combination of high speed bristle motion with extra wide sweeping motion creates effective, yet gentle dynamic fluid cleaning action. So you get superior plaque removal, especially in hard-to-reach areas, deep between teeth and below the gumline. In fact, this technology generates 31,000 bristle sweeps per minute, and laboratory studies show that it removes harmful plaque bacteria up to four millimeters beyond the bristle tips -- even below the gum-line. With the Sonicare 9500 in hand, you can count on naturally whiter teeth and healthier gums.
Sonicare -- Use it for your mouth, use it for your body Diabetes: Studies have shown that people with diabetes are more susceptible to oral infections and gum disease than those without diabetes. The Sonicare toothbrush is proven to reduce gingivitis, contributing to better oral health and, therefore, better overall health.
Cardiovascular: People with severe gum disease may have up to double the risk of stroke or heart attack. And Sonicare is clinically proven to reduce plaque, the root cause of gum disease, making Sonicare an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
Pre-term low birth weight: When severe gum disease is present, some women are up to seven times more likely to deliver a pre-term low birth weight baby. And Sonicare toothbrushes are clinically proven to reduce gingivitis, so they can significantly improve oral health for better overall health.

Ultreo Ultrasound Toothbrush Review

Ultreo Ultrasound Toothbrush
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my Sonicare Elite for years, and when it was starting to fritz out I saw the ads for this toothbrush, so I jumped right in. It takes some getting used to. The brush head is much larger than that of the Sonicare Elite. There is a rubber ultrasonic thing in the middle surrounded by bristles. The instructions say to keep the bristles on your teeth as much as possible. I found it kind of difficult to get used to where to 'aim' the bristles. It seemed like the rubber doohicky was the only thing touching my teeth. After a few weeks it became easier and now it's no big deal. It also recommends brushing your lower teeth first, as the technology apparently needs liquid to perform well, and brushing your lower teeth first helps create a little pool (ick) of liquid.
It has the quadrant reminder so you can brush for 30 seconds each part of your mouth. That's the fun part, the little buzzer is actually a cute little ditty! Silly but a fun feature.
My teeth feel really clean after using this brush, particularly when I pay close attention to spending a second or two on each tooth. If I am lazy and just brush without paying attention, I feel like my teeth are about the same as with my Sonicare.
Lastly, I have super sensitive gums due to a receding gumline...I've had gum surgery which helped but didn't completely correct it. As a result some toothbrushes actually hurt - the Oral B felt like it was taking a layer off both my teeth and gums and left them aching all day. No pain, no sensitivity with the Ultreo! Overall, it's a good electric toothbrush. I don't think it's all that groundbreaking, but I like it.

How Ultreo Works Ultreo is the first power toothbrush to combine patented ultrasound waveguide technology with precisely tuned sonic bristle action. Ultreo's bristles create microbubbles that are powerfully activated by nearly 4 million cycles of ultrasound energy per brushing channeled by a patented ultrasound waveguide. What to Expect
The Ultreo brushing experience is unlike any other toothbrush. Here are some useful tips to help you become accustomed to the unique feel. We guarantee that after the initial adjustment period, your teeth will feel cleaner than ever before.
As ultrasound requires a fluid medium to perform effectively, try to keep as much fluid around the bristles as possible while you brush. Ultreo has been designed to work with a small "pea-sized" amount of toothpaste. Ultreo should be used with gentle pressure and a light touch.Keep the bristles, not the waveguide, in contact with the teeth and gumline while brushing. You may feel the waveguide touching your teeth at first. This is normal and most users report that the waveguide is not noticeable at all after the first few brushings.

Purchase an Ultreo ultrasound toothbrush and use it for 30 days. If your teeth don't feel cleaner than ever before, give us a call at 1.877.4.ULTREO and we'll refund your money. We believe in our ultrasound difference.

Oral-B Triumph Professional Care 9400 Power Toothbrush Review

Oral-B Triumph Professional Care 9400 Power Toothbrush
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Summary: Just buy the cheapest Oral-B ProfessionalCare model you can find on the market and you will get all of the wonderful teeth cleaning the reviewers here have been raving about without wasting money on useless features.
Review:
I bought this one after the unreplaceable battery on my Oral B 3d Excel (older equivalent of the ProfessionalCare 5000) failed on me. After comparing the two, I have decided that the cheapest ProfessionalCare model they offer which costs half the price had all the features I really needed.
The key features for me are:
* Rechargeable - everything from ProfessionalCare 5000 on up is rechargeable
* High speed 3d oscilations - ALL of their models from the ProfessionalCare 5000 on up have the same rotating speed and they all do side to side and front to back movents!
* Needs to supports all brush heads - Aside from their incompatible sonic line, all their brushes support all their brush heads. I bought the Triumph mainly because I liked the idea of their FlossAction head, and on their web site they claim that it only works with the Triumph. THIS IS INCORRECT. The floss action head works with all their models!!!!!! They claim the triumph brush detects a "smart chip" in the flossaction head that causes it to modify the way the motor works, but all it does is restrict you to the most powerful setting. I tried the Flossaction head on my cheaper 3d excel and it works just fine.
All the other features of the triumph are no big deal - the display screen to tell you the charge, etc. All that stuff is not worth paying twice the price to me.
Features they tout as unique to the Triumph that I don't care about:
* Multiple cleaning speeds - unless you have incredibly sensitive gums, you will just use the maximum speed every day.
* LCD display - You can't see it when you are brushing anyway. When you are done it tells you exactly how many minutes you brushed. Who cares about that? The pulse warning after 2 minutes during the brushing (on all their models) tells you that anyway. And it's pretty easy to remember to stick the thing in the charger once a week... you don't need an LCD display with the exact charge. That's overkill.
*FlossAction support - This is a great brush head but as I said above, this works in all their models even though they claim it does not.
They need to justify a higher price so they just packed on features that don't mean much... my advice is just to get the cheapest ProfessionalCare brush model you can find and it will be just as good.
On top of all this, the Triumph display screen requires a bigger battery and is heavier, which is a slight annoyance.
Go to oralb dot com website where they do a comparison of the features of all their models. Keep in mind that their statement that the Flossaction only works on the triumph is incorrect.

The Sonic Seal for FlexCare (Pack of Blue, Frost and Pink) Review

The Sonic Seal for FlexCare (Pack of Blue, Frost and Pink)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
i bought these as a stocking stuffer, and was totally bummed that they ruin the toothbrush. they fit nicely, look cool, but do something weird to the sonic vibrations. it's like the little covers block the vibrations so they don't get to the brush head. the first time i used one i was struck by how much the handle of my toothbrush was vibrating (my flexcare had never let me down before). i readjusted the silicone cover, even trimmed it a bit around the top rim, but nothing worked. the handle vibrated, and the brush head didn't. total waste of money for me.

Philips Sonicare R732/HX6732/02 HealthyWhite Power Toothbrush Review

Philips Sonicare R732/HX6732/02 HealthyWhite Power Toothbrush
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was first introduced to Sonicare products about 1993. My dentist came back from a
convention and told me that with my dental history (crowns, root canals, and one of the first dental implants) I HAD to have one of these. He set me up on a payment plan for the 250 dollar plus toothbrush. To start using it you had to put in bunch of rings. It tickled like crazy but I got used to it.
Since then I have always had a Sonicare. I always loved them, EXCEPT for keeping them clean. This toothbrush finally addresses those issues.
There is no longer a "ring" collar and a hollow portion in the handle where the magnetic portion of the brush would go. This always got full of gunk and had to be cleaned with a Q-tip.Gunk would also collect between the ring and the brush portion. This problem is eliminated with this new model. The brush head is completely different and simply sticks onto a "spike" that comes out of the top of the brush. There are no crevices for dirt and toothpaste to accumulate. The charging base is also now different, it no longer has an indentation to get dirty. The brush simply sits on a small spike on a flat surface. This, however, does make it easier to knock the toothbrush over, but I will take that for not having to clean out the charger with an old toothbrush.
The toothbrush initially starts with a "ramp up" period, which allows you to get used to the vibrations in your mouth over a few weeks of brushing. If you already have used a Sonicare you can simply put the brush on the base, hold down the button and it will automatically go to full power, you can also reverse this process to re-initialize the toothbrush back to the ramp up mode. If you get the brush and it does not seem as powerful as your old one, you need to skip over this "getting used to it period" by resetting the toothbrush.
The brush head itself is different from my current "Elite" model. This brushhead has a few longer bristles at the top which seem to vibrate faster and clean deeper. That took a little getting used to, I had to switch to the "sensitive" mode for a few of my teeth with extensive dental work. The handle feels more nimble in your hand and the brushhead smaller.Another great feature, the charger can now be used overseas without a voltage converter. You do need a plug so you can physically plug it in (so the prongs match the prongs in whatever country you are visiting) (like Lenmar AC5 World Travel Adapter/Converter Plug Set) but you do not need a transformer. They don't say this in the product description on Amazon, but it is spelled out in the manual.
I am not sure how to determine if my teeth are whiter. I have been using the "clean and white" except on a few teeth. It would be neat if they included a chart in the box so you could test the "before" and "after". My teeth do not feel any cleaner than when I was using the Sonicare Elite, but my gums do seem to be bleeding less when I floss. I am not sure if that is due to the little extra length fibers on the brushhead or a different vibration pattern.
If you have a more recent Sonicare I would not run out to get this one, but would seriously consider it once you have used up your brushheads. Or hand down your older
model to your kids and upgrade. If you travel a lot, this is the one to get, you can use it without worrying about running out of charge. It is a lot easier to keep clean.
Although I usually do not send in warranty cards I do for Sonicare. They are will send you coupons for money off new brushheads and I also once had one that quit after 7 months. I called them, they looked up my warranty and sent me a new one in the mail right away.

Oral-B CrossAction Power Dual Clean Soft Bristle Toothbrush, 1-Count Review

Oral-B CrossAction Power Dual Clean Soft Bristle Toothbrush, 1-Count
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok...here's the scoop: I currently own an Oral-B Vitality Sonic Rechargeable, and have used some of the more expensive Oral-B Rechargeables in the past. I was looking for a decent battery operated toothbrush because my bathroom outlet goes off when the light is turned off, making rechargeables somewhat impractical. So I figured...how much could I lose trying the Oral-B CrossAction Power Dual Clean toothbrush? (NOTE: I received the medium, not the soft, by mistake, and since I only use soft bristled brushes, I went and got a 2-pack of soft replacement heads at Walmart. I was curious to see if there was a noticeable difference between the medium and the soft, and there definitely is. The soft is clearly softer.)
A few "first impressions":
This toothbrush is a bit on the loud side. It sounds kinda like...well...a personal vibrator. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) :o)
It takes 1 battery, whereas some other battery toothbrushes take 2. I don't know if that's a plus, a minus, or neutral. It's just different. The one thing that I think results from only taking one battery is that the handle is on the slim side, which I see as a plus. Some of the other brands I saw on the shelf when I was looking for replacement heads that took 2 batteries looked like they could be used as personal defense weapons. On the minus side, the bottom of this toothbrush is oval, not flat, and there's no stand to place it in, so it won't stand up by itself like some of the other brands.
Using this toothbrush took a little adjustment from the Oral-B Vitality Sonic. The Sonic's head is smaller, and it only has the sonic action. The CrossAction needs to be guided from the front teeth to the back teeth -- at least that's the way I was using it, and it worked very well once I got the hang of it. It's a totally different feel than the Sonic, but an interesting thing happened after comparing the two. My mouth felt fresher (fresh and tingly) after using the CrossAction. At first I thought it was just my imagination. But a couple of times I did a direct comparison, and using the same toothpaste, my mouth definitely felt fresh and tingly with the CrossAction, whereas with the Sonic, it just felt fresh. And the fresh/tingly feeling lasted longer with the CrossAction.
I haven't used it long enough to know how long the battery will last, but I got a pack of 15 AA alkalines for $6, and figure that ought to last for a good while. If I find I'm going through too many batteries, I'll get some Sony Pre-Charged Rechargeables, and that'll take care of that.
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BCG34HRE4KN-Refresh-Pre-Charged-Batteries/dp/B001DL9WDG/ref=pd_cp_e_2
The one cool thing about these cheap battery operated toothbrushes is that you can always change the battery when you need to. With the more expensive rechargeables, when the battery goes after a year or two, that's it -- the batteries in those toothbrushes are not user replaceable.
Conclusion: Deal, or no deal? DEAL! Definitely...DEAL!!!

Philips Sonicare HX6733/70 HealthyWhite 3 Mode Premium Edition Rechargeable T Review

Philips Sonicare HX6733/70 HealthyWhite 3 Mode Premium Edition Rechargeable T
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A few years ago - in my quest to find an electric toothbrush per my dentist's instructions led me to stand in front of the products meticulously comparing one vs. another, did it do this that and the other, price point, etc. Oral B won for 1 reason, price and I had a coupon at Costco and their replacement heads were cheaper. That was a few years ago. I was under the impression that all electric toothbrushes were created equally. Although my teeth's health improved, there are still issues. My last cleaning was very intense at the dentist.
My Oral B is almost dead - it's been 2 years, the battery will hold for a couple of days, but not over a week like it used to. The search for the next toothbrush started.
Surprisingly, I didn't have a hard choice with picking Sonicare. I see the demo/advertising whatever at my dentist. I also knew I wasn't happy with OralB - because my teeth didn't feel clean, and I knew that it was definitely not getting into all the contours of my mouth.
My first use with my Sonicare
I felt like a light bulb exploded in my head. It was ridiculous how clean my teeth felt, as if I just had them cleaned and polished at my dentist. How is that possible with only 1 session? Was my Oral B that bad? Maybe this was a fluke. A few more days went by, my teeth stayed with that smooth clean feeling. It's been a few weeks and I'm hooked.
What's so different about it - the brush head for one. Oral B has a circular head, it spins with use. With the Sonicare, it oscillates back and forth, mimicking real tooth brushing motion. There are contours of the brush so it gets between the teeth. The bristles are stiff to clean my teeth but gentle enough to get into the gums w/o causing bleeding. Oral B brush heads were rough and painful.
This product is great for small mouths, hard to reach areas/crevices and for sensitive teeth.
I like that it has options for sensitive and regular or whitening. I like that it's timed so I know I'm doing the right amount. The toothbrush will shut itself off after 2 minutes. It'll be good for kids too, so they're not doing a swipe and say they're done.
I'm very impressed with this product, very glad I got it and can't wait until my next dentist appointment. I've had it for a few weeks and notice not only are my teeth cleaner, but they are truly whiter.
UPDATE:
I've had it for a few months - went for my cleaning and my dental hygienist noticed my teeth/gums were improving. She asked me what I did differently and told her I switched toothbrushes. HA!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE my toothbrush!
UPDATE 10/6/2010:
Went for my cleaning yesterday - OMG! Can we say miracle? The dental hygienist was super happy to see my gums are getting healthier, when they do the measurements I've been getting mostly 4's (1's are ideal, 5's are no good), but this time, they were at mostly 2's with a couple of 3's!! My gums/teeth and mouth are overall getting better with each visit. My dentist is happy with my progress - so am I!! the least amount of dental work, the happier I'll be.

Philips Sonicare FlexCare Plus HX6972/10, Rechargeable Toothbrush Review

Philips Sonicare FlexCare Plus HX6972/10, Rechargeable Toothbrush
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The differences between this model and the "older" Flexcare are minimal, that is probably why all they did is add a + to the end of the name. But there are a few differences between the two.
1. Most notably is the "new" look. It has a cleaner appearance with most of the front being a dark chrome look, also instead of the green led's, it has a backlight behind the selected brushing mode.
2. Gone are the 'Go Care' and 'Max Care' and in their place are 'Gum Care' and 'Refresh' mode. They do exactly what the other one did except for one important change on the 'Gum Care' mode which replaced 'Max Care (which is why I picked the new one over the old) '. Instead of having a 3 minute routine with 45 seconds each quad (30 normal + 15 massage) for a total of 3 min; they now have it where it goes 30 seconds each quad with an added 1 minute at the end for 'problem areas' which is broken down into four 15 second intervals.
3. 'Different' color, looks very similar - its 'Soft Sky Blue' instead of 'Medical Blue'. Basically bluer color than the old one which was more of a green color.
4. Supposedly lasts longer - 42 2-minute brushings, vs. 20 2-minute brushings of the old one
5. Case is now hard plastic instead of the soft case that comes with the old model
There is also a few changes in what the battery display shows with its charge but I'm not going to go into it that far with this review. I decided to upgrade from the Sonicare Elite as I was getting tired of seeing the nasty gunk that would grow inside of the handle. It was time to get a new brush head so I decided to go ahead and get a new brush while I was looking around. Overall I think it has been a good decision as this brush shouldn't need the constant cleaning of the old one and I like the new 'Gum Care' routine. So if wanted to know the differences, there you go, you probably now know more than you wanted about a toothbrush. If your like me and wanted to know at least some of this, it should help you decide between the two. Be sure to click yes if this helped you out! Thanks.

Zero Germ UV Light Toothbrush Sanitizer Review

Zero Germ UV Light Toothbrush Sanitizer

Just got two of these in the mail a few days ago and finally had the chance to evaluate it. True, I don't have the lab to test for "Swine Flu" but can tell you that this device is way under powered to be effective (it's powered by 2 AA batteries for crying out loud). I took this unit apart for further investigation and it appears to be a single LED light (yes, LED) and some thin wirs which puts this units valuation at about $1.75.
I was hoping for the best when I ordered this as the bacteria in your mouth which can consist of herpes simplex I (from people you come in contact with), influenza virus, staphylococci, streptococci, along with other bacteria that may cause diarrhea as well as gum disease.
I have since gone back to dipping my brush in antibacterial mouthwash daily and replacing it every month.

Philips Sonicare FlexCare Rechargeable Sonic Toothbrush with Sanitizer Review

Philips Sonicare FlexCare Rechargeable Sonic Toothbrush with Sanitizer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a very happy Oral-B (Braun) user for about the last 4 years. During that time I've gone through 2 of their higher-end brushes. I've never been one to bad-mouth Sonicare, because it's a good brush, but I just preferred the smaller size of the Oral-B, along with the pop-off brush heads. Now however, Sonicare has changed that with their new model, the Flexcare.
I purchased this model because it was recommended by a dentist who said that the new Flexcare is not just a new style of brush, but that it actually has a greatly improved brushing technology. So, I bought a brush online and proceeded to try it out. Wow.
After having used the Flexcare, it doesn't even seem possible to compare it to my old Oral-B (which is only a year old.) This brush actually seems 20 years more advanced, and that is not an exaggeration. It has a bit of a high-pitch to it which doesn't bother me, but the real story is in the vibration. The brush seems to work exponentially better with 80% less vibration; it's a dream to use. I actually get sad after it auto-shuts off after the brushing cycle, something that I wish it didn't do. Also, and perhaps most important, is that it feels like it cleans my teeth better than my Oral-B. After using the Flexcare for awhile, I went back to my old Oral-B, just to compare... As soon as I turned it on, I couldn't believe that I loved it so much, it felt like, and sounded like an antique in comparison.
The different brushing modes on the Flexcare are really nice, but there is a small problem with all your options. One thing I'd like to be able to do is to "program" the brush to do the 3-minute brushing mode every time by default (this mode does the brushing action and also the massage action.) However, whenever you place the brush back on the charger, it automatically resets back to the 2-minute brushing mode. Programming the brush for the mode that you like every time you pick it up is not hard, but it's really annoying. Sonicare: please fix this in later models.
This brush comes with 2 chargers, one for home (with the sanitizer) and a travel one (without a sanitizer.) It also comes with a brush head cover, and a travel pouch to put the wand in. These accessories will make traveling with my brush much more enjoyable. I've never understood why more electric toothbrush makers don't include or even make these accessories.
The pop-off brush heads (as compared to sonicare's old screw on heads) are fantastic and much better than the Oral-B pop-off ones. On my Oral-B I had to remove the brush head to wash out the gunk after brushing, but because the Sonicare brush heads are longer, very, very litle gunk gets in them. That was a pleasant surprise. Although, removing and attaching the brush head on the Flexcare wand requires a lot more force, which I don't like.
The U.V. sanitizer is a nice gadget, but who knows how useful it really is? In fact, there may even be some long-term immune system dangers by killing every bacteria/virus in sight, just like using anti-bacterial soap, but this is not the forum for that. I used the UV Sanitizer a few times, but I don't use it at all anymore because of what I believe to be a very real problem with all the anti-bacterial products out there these days. Although, based on the few times I did use it, I could see where its utilization on a daily basis would be cumbersome. If you brush twice a day, it becomes too much of a bother to remove the brush head every time and put it in the sanitizer. The brush head needs to be aligned perfectly in the sanitizer and the door closed and snapped gently. If you have big hands, putting the brush head into the sanitizer is more awkward, especially if you're using the large brush head (FYI: the brush heads come in 2 sizes, small and large, and one of each is included in the package.)
It's nice to see that Sonicare has FINALLY ditched the NiCad batteries and went to Li-ion batteries; what took so long? This change means that the brush will now run longer on a single charge, and won't develop a memory by leaving it on the charging stand. It's also the reason that the brush handle is now smaller which makes it more manageable.
As much as I love this brush, I do realize that the price Sonicare has marketed it at is exceedingly high. If I were to buy it again, I would save $20 and get the one without the U.V. sanitizer. Other than the high price and a little nitpicking on the brushing modes, I really couldn't be more pleased with this brush. Oral-B has a LONG way to go to catch up to this Sonicare model.
-------
Update 29 November 07
The brush still continues to amaze me and I LOVE using it everyday. I've stopped using the charging station with the UV Sanitizer and I now only use the "travel charger" for everyday use at home. One nice benefit in changing to the very, very small travel charger was that I freed up some space on my bathroom counter, and the brush is easier to set down and pickup without the sanitizer being in the way. I can't understand one reviewer who said the brush doesn't sit right or balance well on the stand. Also, I have sensitive teeth and use a sensitive toothpaste, and the brushes' actions have not bothered me at all. I'd buy this brush again in a heartbeat.

Philips Sonicare Essence Premium Edition 2 Sets - Rechargeable Sonic Toothbrush (2 Handles with Quadpacer, 2 Charger Bases, 3 Standard Brush Heads) Review

I was already familiar with the Sonicare Elite and have owned and used it or the Essence for over 5 years. This was a wonderful purchase as a gift for a family of 4 that live on an island and do not have Sonicare readily available, not to mention reliable shipping - so the great price for 2 full brush sets was great for us this Christmas! They report they love the Sonicare as much as my husband and I do. The Essence line is the way to go, according to both of us, as the newer FlexCare gave my husband much trouble and gave completely out within 1 year (please note we travel heavily using these; I think the FlexCare just isn't as hearty as the Elite / Essence). Wonderful brushes overall though!

Philips Sonicare UV Sanitizer Review

Philips Sonicare UV Sanitizer

(More customer reviews)
I have a biology background and the good news is that this amount of UV light is going to have the desired effect on the bacteria that live in your toothbrush head. It will induce many double strand breaks in the bacterial DNA, making it hard or impossible for them to grow. It will have no lasting harmful effects on the brush because no chemicals/toxins are used. My understanding is that there is a shut-off to prevent humans from being exposed to the UV light, which is a good thing as UV light will interfere with human DNA in the same way that it damages bacterial DNA. However, I would like to point out a few things:
1, The detergent in your toothpaste (variously called sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, etc) will probably be effective enough at getting rid of bacteria -- that's why we use it.
2, The bacteria are already in your mouth anyway! How do you think your toothbrush head is getting contaminated in the first place?
3, People have survived very happily without wasting money on idiotic gadgets like this.
4, The bacteria that are NOT killed by this treatment are more likely to be mutated. It's a biological fact that UV light increases the number of DNA mutations. While most bacteria will be killed, the 0.01% that survive are more likely to have suffered mutations. This is not true for cell-disruptive methods of destruction like bleach and detergent (including the detergent in your toothpaste).
To summarize, dentists use this sort of gizmo because they're putting the same tools into the mouths of many different people. They don't want to get sued, especially in light of reports suggesting that certain diseases may be passed through saliva. However, this gizmo is completely unnecessary if you do not share your brushheads with other people. In fact, it's not even necessary if you share your brushheads with people you wouldn't mind kissing...
Lastly, please bear in mind that not all bacteria are bad and that you actually need some to help you digest food properly. Also, good bacteria take up space and resources to keep bad bacteria from finding a niche. So, try NOT to use 'antibacterial' soap, do eat some live active yogurt after a course of antibiotics and always completely finish a course of antibiotics that you've been prescribed by a doctor.

Philips Sonicare HX7003/82 Elite Brush heads-3 pack Review

There is no labeling on these to let you know that they are in fact from the stated manufacturer... rather a small little label to indicate that they may be from that manufacturer. Doesn't really sit well with me, but they look just like what I got with my original toothbrush and the oem was out of stock when I tried to order from them - plus these were a fairly good price - can't complain about that too much.

Philips Sonicare HealthyWhite Power Toothbrush Review

Philips Sonicare HealthyWhite Power Toothbrush
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The batteries on my old Sonicare Elite (E-series) died on me, so I decided to get a new one. The R710 has several incremental upgrades which are worth the difference in price.
First and foremost, like the FlexCare line, it uses the ProResults head. This alone is worth the price difference. They snap in easily, they cost less, and the handle traps much less gunk than before. Sold. I'm still waiting to see how long they last, my guess is about the same.
In addition to the regular cleaning cycle, the R710 has a second cycle designed to scrub away stains. It's selected by pushing the power button twice. In this mode, the 5th (last) interval of the normal cycle is pulsed in a way that's supposed to break up stains on your visible teeth. Note that after this interval, the brush stops. If you still want to brush your tongue or concentrate on hard-to-reach areas, you'll have to push the power button again.
The R710 now also comes with a Li-ion battery, meaning a noticeable decrease in weight as well an increase in battery life. The charger is about half the size of the Elite's, but it doesn't have anywhere to wrap the cord like the deluxe charger on the Flexcare. It comes with a little plate that holds two extra heads though. The charge indicator is a simple LED. If it's blinking, it's below 50%; if it's solid, then it's above. Maybe not as informative or fun to watch as the Elite or FlexCare, but it does the job.
In short, if you want a good basic Sonicare, this is the one to get. It has all the great redesigned features of the FlexCare but less of the (IMO gimmicky) extra routines and modes. If you have sensitive teeth, check out the R732. For an extra $20, it also comes with a few extra accessories like a case and deluxe charger.
UPDATE (1/5/2011): My Sonicare failed a few days before the 2-year warranty expired. It powered on, but the action gradually weakened over a week, until the brush head no longer moved at all.
Following a short call, Philips promptly sent out a new HX6730 handle along with a return mailer for the defective unit. Great support, as long as you're within the warranty period.
