(More customer reviews)I bought this stone before I knew anything about straight razor shaving.. Had I read a LITTLE BIT more about honing and using straight razors, I would not have purchased this one.
Amongst the Cons: The stone..
..isn't wide enough to accommodate the entire blade edge
..isn't long enough to allow a satisfying pass
..still requires a lap to flatten
..without other stones, your ability to restore, repair, and re-edge a blade are severely restricted
As any experienced straight razor owner knows, a satisfying and frustrating shave are separated, quite literally, by a razor's edge. Since honing a straight razor is so sensitive to technique and honing style, it's important, especially for beginners, to find a tool that gives every possible advantage to the user.
If you're looking for an easy to use set of honing stones, I recommend the Norton Waterstone Starter Kit. It includes the WIDELY supported 4000/8000 Combo Waterstone (it's the standard by which all other hones are compared in the shaving community), a coarser 220/1000 stone, and the all-important Lapping Stone, to flatten your hones.
If you're even considering this stone, you're probably a beginner.. if this is the case, learn from a one-time beginner and go with something else!
