(More customer reviews)The is a great straight razor, especially if its your first one. As a novice, I tried to educate myself as much as possible before buying and I took a chance buying this razor. I was going to go Dovo, but I read that Fromm produced a razor that is just as good, so I thought I would try it. I was not disappointed. It took a bit more than a "light" honing to put a shaving edge on it, but after stropping with a horsehide, it produced a beautiful edge that gives a great shave. I cut myself once, but just barely; otherwise, I felt like I could actually get closer than with my old disposable razor. I also love the freedom of movement to sculpt and shape around my beard. One word of caution: allow yourself plenty of time to shave. This is not meant for a rushed shave, but rather for a nice, slow therapeutic cleansing of the facial hair. Kind of the same feeling you get after carefully manicuring your lawn. Also, use a 1000/6000 honing stone or better for honing the edge.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this set along with some other items a few weeks back. I compared it to others that were similar I felt this was a good choice.
When the set arrived it looked nice and felt very nice. I tried to shave with it, it was no where near shave ready. It was necessary to do some hone work to get it ready.
Once it is properly honed and well stropped it does a good job. This is not a razor for a first timer. If you are a first timer I would suggest getting a good name brand razor such as DOVO or the like. Or search out a site that hones the razor prior to shipping so that it is shave ready Theirs Issard.
The strop is decent, you will have to spend time breaking it in. This is normal.
Had I not had a set of hones and knew how to prepare the blade I would have been disappointed with this purchase. For someone that knows how to do these things it is a good purchase. If you do not know how, you can visit a number of sites on line that is dedicated to straight razor shaving. The skills can be learned in a few evenings reading postings of other men that know how and impart their knowledge and wisdom freely.
Eventually you will have to purchase a set of honing stones for yourself, at some point in time you will need them or have the knife sent off to be honed. This is true of all straight razors no matter where you purchase them.
If you are prepared to learn and try it yourself it is a good purchase/project kit.

(More customer reviews)Don't waste your money on this straight razor if you have any plans to shave your face with it. It's never going to happen. It's way to dull to shave with right out of the box and needs to be professionally honed as most new razors do. So I sent it out and paid another $25 to get it sharpened but the man who does my other razors for me said that after 4 hours of effort there was just no way to get a proper edge on it because the metal was too soft and the grind was uneven along the edge. He explained that there were a number of poor quality blades for sales that just cannot be shaved with and that this was one. He showed me others as well so I'd know what to look for. Needless to say I was very unhappy with my bargain priced razor.

(More customer reviews)My experience is consistent with the previous reviewer's. The razor's edge needed careful reworking before it even approached a usable state. (I used an ad hoc sequence of fine oil stones, followed by abrasive papers up to 8000 grit, with water, on a piece of float glass, before stropping.)
At first I thought it was me. I used a straight razor, cluelessly, 30 years ago, and am trying to teach myself how to use one correctly now. I tried this razor and gave up for months, until it occurred to me that I had nothing to lose by trying to sharpen it. The visible grinding marks on the edge should have been a clue; the problem was NOT me!
I'm giving this product two stars because I got mine at a local beauty supply shop for $10. If I had known it was not really a finished product, that would have been a good deal, in context. If you have any idea how to sharpen something like this, $27.99 isn't bad. Make your mistakes with something like this, and then look for something fancier!

This was my first straight razor and I did not know that some companies sell untreated razors. After a six shaves the handle cracked. The seller did offer to replace the razor.I felt I should write this so others do not make the mistake I did. The kit is really nice you just have to water proof it before you use it. SO REMEMBER TO WATER PROOF THIS KIT.

(More customer reviews)I already use Art of Shaving pre-shave oil, shaving cream, and their upper end badger brush. I have always liked these and especially in the lavender scent. Lavender is so calming and girls always comment on the smell. The pre-shave oil is were it is at especially if you get razor burn easily.
I bought these for groomsmen's gifts with a dopp bag. It was a good way to expose them to this product without investing in the sampler or a full kit. The positive feedback I got from these guys were: great scent, like the pre-shave oil, and like the after shave balm. The less-positive feedback I got was: the shaving cream does not later well and the brush falls apart.
The brush is pretty low end when compared to even AofS's low-end/regular sized brushes. Others have mentioned the same thing so I would not expect to travel with this and expect a high performer. It is best for getting your foot in the door to see if you like it.
I use the shaving cream soap bar so I have never had any experience with the shaving cream from the tube. I think I'll stick to my AofS soap bar and badger brush.
