Merkur "Futur" Safety Razor, Satin Finish Review

Merkur Futur Safety Razor, Satin Finish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a new-comer to the D/E world, but have been looking long and hard for something that shaves this close! I am only 26, but ever since I started shaving (around 16) I had always been unsatisfied. Either by paying too much for cartridge replacements (mach3, fusion, quattro, disposable, etc....) or by the tearing feeling I would get from an electric. I've probably owned every disposable on the market, and 5 different electrics. Not that I loved shaving, I just was always hoping the next product would actually work!
Here enters the idea of straight razors and double edge (d/e) razors. I first heard of it a long time ago, but as with many people my age I thought the newer products were surely better because they have by and large replaced any idea of D/E's.
Anyone looking at this razor has probably already done some research, that's how I found it. And it seems, that's how many other people have come across Merkur as well. To that end I will try and keep my story short and bullet-point my original (pre-purchase) concerns and my afterthoughts now of owning this razor for 3 months.
Pre-Purchase Concerns:
- I thought that it really couldn't be that much closer than a disposable.
- I thought it was too much money up-front (even though the long term costs were lower, it was difficult to decide since I had no point of comparison)
- I was worried about how long it would take to shave. I don't have much time in the morning as I generally trade it for as much sleep as possible. Post-Purchase Experiences:
Okay, so to start I have to say that this razor as with many other D/E's will do a GREAT job on your face! My concerns above were quelled after a couple of weeks using the Futur. Your technique is the MOST important part of shaving with a D/E and I guarantee that you will be frustrated for a month or two (learning curve dependent). I walked out after shaving a few times with at least 20 little cuts all over my neck. Since I'm assuming that you've already done some research, I'll also assume that you've heard that story before - and let me assure you... it will happen to you.
Despite that unpleasant experience, once I finally started to get the technique down, my shaves became better and better! They've been getting so good lately that I can't wait to hit the shower and shave! It is one of the most satisfying rituals I've come across. I tell all of my friends about it, trying to convert everyone that I see. Using a D/E truly is the best way to shave... although it will take you longer in the morning to do it properly.
When I was using an electric, or disposable cartridge type, I could generally shave in 5 minutes. Slather on some cheap shaving cream, and tug away with your mach3. To get a really good shave now, it takes me about 20 minutes (start to finish). My neck is the part that takes the longest. I have hair that looks like a hurricane and grows in all sorts of directions which makes it very difficult to shave and not cut yourself. Despite the time consumed shaving I still manage to get all my "zzz's" in the morning. That's because the shave is soo close I can shave at night before going to bed. When I wake up in the morning it's still as smooth as ever!
The first time you experience that is one amazing moment of jubilation. And after, you'll never go back.
Overall, I would recommend this razor to just about anyone looking to buy. BUT, this razor is not the end-all be-all. It's fantastic, but the classic Merkur HD style is just as good (for 1/2 the price). Even though it's adjustable, I essentially keep it at the same setting all of the time.
Here are some other thoughts if you are considering getting into D/E shaving. The up-front cost can be expensive as mentioned earlier, but it is worth it. Below I've listed (in order) where you should put your money first, the products at the bottom can be upgraded later and these first ones are good enough to get you started:
#1) Brush! (This is the most important part of wet-shaving). You may think the razor is more important, but it's not. You don't need a $500 brush, but about $50 - $80 will get you a very respectable brush from Vulvix. Make sure it's a Badger hair brush. And within the badger brushes some people claim that silver-tip badger hair is top of the line (it's just hair from a certain part of the badger).
#2) Razor
#3) Post-Shaving Cream. Here is where many people cheap-out. The old train of though goes that an alcohol based aftershave or something off the shelf at a supermarket (read Nivea for Men, etc.) is fine. This has not been the case for me. Especially while you are learning, you'll want a good after-shave that will help reduce the redness and irritation you'll experience. Let me remind you, that once you get your technique down - you won't see anymore razor bumps!
For the cream, buy Geo Trumper's Skin Food. It's nearly $30 a bottle, but well worth it. Don't chicken out, you face will love you for it!
#4) Shaving Cream. I've been using Proraso here - it's cheap, $9, and will last a long time. Go for this while you're learning. After your first tube of this you should be getting pretty good - then you can buy some of Geo Trumper's shaving cream tubs. :)Now that you have those products selected, here are a few more that you are going to need. These are all cheap and often overlooked, get them - it will make your life easier.
#1) 'My Nik is Sealed' (This is much better than a stiptic pencil, and won't leave any white residue on your face. Stops bleeding from cuts and scraps quick. Especially needed while learning. Note: The product name is actually "My Nik is sealed", just for clarification.
#2) Large coffee mug. A wider mug is better as this is what you should mix your later in. Check out the following link from "Mantic59"
http://www.youtube.com/mantic59
for some very educational videos. I watched his whole series and it was
very very helpful.
#3) Grapeseed Oil. Yes I know that sounds odd, but it works wonders if you oil up your face before applying lather. This helps me so that the razor glides over my skin easier and reduces cuts. You can buy it at your local supermarket and it should be cheap. Also, don't substitute olive oil or another oil. There is something about Grapeseed oil that works better than the rest.
#4) Hydrocortisone 1% Cream. This should be used sparingly if ever - I don't believe it is good to apply to your skin on a regular basis. It's benefit? It will remove almost all razor burn within an hour, so if you've really chopped up your face and need to go to work or on a date... it can be a lifesaver!
#5) Mens Grooming Tweezers. Not necessary but helpful to get out in-grown hairs (as they occur). All right folks - I hope this was informative and helpful. Good luck in your purchase - you will not be disappointed if you stick with it.
Happy Shaving!

Edwin Jagger Double Edge (DE) Safety Razor - Lined Chrome Handle Review

Edwin Jagger Double Edge (DE) Safety Razor - Lined Chrome Handle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My first safety razor. Almost every review I read about the Edwin Jagger said that it's better than the various Merkurs that everybody starts out with. Since it's only a few dollars more (in some cases cheaper), I figured I'd make the leap with this one.
For me, the shave is close, comfortable, and smooth. I feel like I have better control with this than a cartridge, especially with the angle and location of the blade against my face. This has a very impressive heft and finish. The metal is super shiny, but grip is never an issue, even with wet/soapy hands.
This is a quality product at a good price. It feels good in the hands, and it does its job well. If you're tired of getting ripped off by cheap-feeling overpriced cartridge razors like I was, give this a try; you won't look back.

Geo F. Trumper Violet Shaving Cream Jar 200g Review

Geo F. Trumper Violet Shaving Cream Jar 200g

Smooth, luxurious, smells great, and provides a close, great shave. Amazing stuff. The tub will last for many months if you use sparingingly with a brush. There's nothing like waking up with this stuff in the mornings. Truly amazing in smell, but most importantly, yields an amazingly close, non-irritating shave. Price on this site is a rip-off.

Parker 91R Super Heavyweight Double Edge Safety Razor & 10 Shark Chrome Blades Review

Parker 91R Super Heavyweight Double Edge Safety Razor and 10 Shark Chrome Blades
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using the Parker 91R now for a couple of months and have fallen in love with it. I stopped using Mach3 and other disposables completely and am currently using Derby Extra blades in the razor. The Parker and Derby combination cuts warm hairs like butter.
The razor is very capable of shaving exceptionally close to the skin. Up until shaving with the Parker 91R, I had never experienced such a close shave. My cheeks were so smooth my skin felt somewhat fake with lotion on it. Gave me a "what the?!?!" reaction the first time. Was accustomed to encountering stubble when using the Mach3 and other disposables. The closely shaven parts were extremely smooth.
The 7AM blades are good to go with at first since they are not quite as sharp as Derby Extras. The 7AM blades are therefore more forgiving when learning how to obtain the proper shaving angle and pressure. I recommend buying a quality badger hair brush and using shaving soap cakes for a really good shave. Following the shave up with some Hempz(tm) lotion leaves skin super soft and smooth. Hempz(tm) doesn't leave a greasy feeling like petroleum-laden lotions.
Some tips for the Parker 91R are...
(1) Use proper pressure. The less pressure against your face, the better. Do not press down like with Mach3 razors -- with a safety razor, you are trying to glide over the skin and cut the hairs, not the skin. Mach3 razors let people get away with bad shaving techniques at the expense of stubbly, non-close shaves.
(2) Use proper angle. The safest and easiest way to learn the proper angle is to start with the smooth, polished top portion of the head touching your skin. The handle will be sticking away from your face at a 90 degree angle -- straight away from your skin surface. While pulling the smooth part of the head across your face, slowly tilt the handle toward the cutting direction. You will hear hairs beginning to cut as you lower the handle -- keep it at the point at which you just start hearing the hairs being cut. That's a good starting point angle to use while learning. Further experimentation can be used once proper technique and feel is obtained...get a good feel for the razor first though.
(3) Use a good quality shaving soap or shaving gel. You want good lubrication and moisturizing properties.
(4) Shaving right after a hot shower makes hairs easier to cut.
(5) Shave with the hair grain (growth direction) at first and see if that gives a close enough shave. If more closeness is desired, re-lather and shave again across (sideways) or against the grain. Against the grain shaving causes ingrown hairs on some people. However, I have yet to get any nasty ingrown hairs from the Parker 91R and my skin is very sensitive.
(6) Take things slow and use short strokes. Don't shave like the guys on Mach3 commercials. It will throw the razor angle off the ideal position. Use short shaving strokes and take things slow -- you will be surprised at the results.
(7) Follow your shave up with some sort of lotion that isn't greasy and won't clog pores. I like Hempz(tm) lotion since it does a great job, smells fantastic, protects my freshly shaved skin, and disappears
without leaving any greasy feeling.
(8) Expect a few cuts the first week or so of shaving until you get a good feel for the razor and how dual-edge safety razors behave. The cuts are always superficial and stop bleeding without much fuss. Not like a cut from a disposable. After a few weeks or so of shaving, you should be able to shave without any cuts while still obtaining a very close shave.
-------
I really like the fact that the Parker 91R allows me to shave multiple days in a row without turning my neck into a warzone. It leaves my problem spots smooth without ingrown hairs and massive amounts of skin irritation. A very fine razor for people like me with sensitive skin and those looking to save money by breaking free of the multi-blade disposable price wars.

Merkur Long Handled Double Edge Safety Razor Chrome #180, 10 Double Edge Platinum Blades Review

Merkur Long Handled Double Edge Safety Razor Chrome #180, 10 Double Edge Platinum Blades
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was always looking to get the old fashioned shave. After years of blowing money on Machs, I wish I'd done this sooner. Like the other reviews say, use the weight of the shaver no pressure. just heat your face up with a hot wet towel and get some nice lather going with the brush and let it slide down your neck and face. Just let it roll...nice and easy. Dont rush or you will cut yourself. just take your time and do a good job and you wont have to shave again for 2 days. I have facial hair that is tougher to trim than steel wool. This thing is like a hot knife through butter. Paired with a 100% Silvertip Badger Bristle Shaving Brush here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002UB3BF8/ref=oss_product********and a tin of Taylor of Old Bond Street Avocado Shaving Cream
here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QFZ1QK/ref=oss_product...get all three working together and you have the smoothest skin since you were 6 years old!
5 stars!!!!ADVICE******
Dont go for kits just because it comes with a brush and a stand.. Most kits pair a popular razor with a mediocre brush and a stand that costs a dollar to make.
go the extra mile and get them separately and they will last for years.
my kit is a drop in the bucket compared to years of money on stupid mach 3's cartridges? I've been using mach 3 since it came out in 1998. Thats 12 years ago!
Do the math. average 12 pack of mach 3's 23.00 x 1 year about 6 12 packs a year for me = 138 x 12 years = $1656I think you get the idea.

#150 Straight Razor Ultimate Pro * Simco Strop * Fromm Strop Dressing Combo Review

#150 Straight Razor Ultimate Pro * Simco Strop * Fromm Strop Dressing Combo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this set along with some other items a few weeks back. I compared it to others that were similar I felt this was a good choice.
When the set arrived it looked nice and felt very nice. I tried to shave with it, it was no where near shave ready. It was necessary to do some hone work to get it ready.
Once it is properly honed and well stropped it does a good job. This is not a razor for a first timer. If you are a first timer I would suggest getting a good name brand razor such as DOVO or the like. Or search out a site that hones the razor prior to shipping so that it is shave ready Theirs Issard.
The strop is decent, you will have to spend time breaking it in. This is normal.
Had I not had a set of hones and knew how to prepare the blade I would have been disappointed with this purchase. For someone that knows how to do these things it is a good purchase. If you do not know how, you can visit a number of sites on line that is dedicated to straight razor shaving. The skills can be learned in a few evenings reading postings of other men that know how and impart their knowledge and wisdom freely.
Eventually you will have to purchase a set of honing stones for yourself, at some point in time you will need them or have the knife sent off to be honed. This is true of all straight razors no matter where you purchase them.
If you are prepared to learn and try it yourself it is a good purchase/project kit.

The blades are inexpensive, work well and they do last for a few shaves. They were the first ones I tried, and I actually have a Merkur razor so I thought they'd work well together. However, after trying the Derby Extra's, I have to say that those are much better blades. As always your mileage may vary. I would recommend getting less than a 3 pack and just giving them a try if you really want to test them out.

Colonel Conk Black Super Shave Mug including Colonel Conk Shave Soap Review

Colonel Conk Black Super Shave Mug including Colonel Conk Shave Soap
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The mug was much bigger than I thought it would be, which might be good for some, but it barely fits in my medicine cabinet. It's like ordering a mocha grande in my bathroom. It's just bigger than it needs to be.
Second, it's much thinner and fragile than it seems, or should be. I can't imagine it surviving very long in a bathroom. If it takes any kind of tumble, or even if you just set it down a bit too hard, my guess is it would break.
Third, it's cool that it comes with free shaving soap, but I was expecting some kind of standard shaving soap. It came with Almond. What kind of man wants to smell like almonds? Either Colonel Conk has very unusual views on the art of manliness, or this is the company's way to unload unpopular soaps.
Not worth the money.

Merkur twin blades are far superior to Gillette. They are sharper and have a cleaner edge. The lubricated strip does the job without leaving a slime on your skin like Gillette.
I am bald and shave my head daily. Merkur twin blades give the closest, smoothest shave I have ever had without knicks or scratches. These blades hold there edge. Highly recommended.

Simco Straight Razor #410 * White Handle Review

Simco Straight Razor #410 * White Handle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My experience is consistent with the previous reviewer's. The razor's edge needed careful reworking before it even approached a usable state. (I used an ad hoc sequence of fine oil stones, followed by abrasive papers up to 8000 grit, with water, on a piece of float glass, before stropping.)
At first I thought it was me. I used a straight razor, cluelessly, 30 years ago, and am trying to teach myself how to use one correctly now. I tried this razor and gave up for months, until it occurred to me that I had nothing to lose by trying to sharpen it. The visible grinding marks on the edge should have been a clue; the problem was NOT me!
I'm giving this product two stars because I got mine at a local beauty supply shop for $10. If I had known it was not really a finished product, that would have been a good deal, in context. If you have any idea how to sharpen something like this, $27.99 isn't bad. Make your mistakes with something like this, and then look for something fancier!

Merkur Heavy Duty Double Edge Razor #34C + 5 Free DE Razor Blades Review

Merkur Heavy Duty Double Edge Razor #34C + 5 Free DE Razor Blades
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm African American and a military officer. Clean shaves are a must daily and I've tried it all...magic shave, mach 3, Fusion (or as I call it mach 5), Norelco Nivea for men shavers and clippers. All had their positives but mixing chemicals daily became tiring and in-grown hairs were unsightly. So, after much research I decided to try wet-shaving. This has made a world of difference.
The Merkur HD is my first razor. Using Art of Shaving products and Merkur blades, I'm able to get a close shave with no razor burn/bumps. Occasionally I'll get an in-grown but I blame my technique (I still cut myself every now and then...usually when I'm in a rush). This razor definitely has some weight to it and I find the blade loading/unloading simple although not as cool as the "butterfly" razors.
I highly recommend this product for a beginner. Blades are equally as important. I have found Merkur blades to be the happy medium between quality and sharpness although Feather's clearly are samurai sword sharp. Make sure you get a good quality badger brush and shaving cream/soap. Good luck!

Wood Shaving Set with Leather Strop

This shaving set was given to me for a Christmas present and I assumed it was "shave ready" right out of the box. This was my first straight razor and I did not know that some companies sell untreated razors. After a six shaves the handle cracked. The seller did offer to replace the razor.I felt I should write this so others do not make the mistake I did. The kit is really nice you just have to water proof it before you use it. SO REMEMBER TO WATER PROOF THIS KIT.
