I am so glad to find it online at Amazon. I bought 20 cakes when the only store I knew of that carried it was closing it out. I wanted enough to get me through to retirement...I hope never to shave thereafter.

(More customer reviews)This was the second soap I purchased after switching from canned junk to real shave soap/cream. This is without a doubt the best smelling soap I've found. Something like a warm fern with a slight woodsy smell. Not overpowering, but rich and smooth. Smell 'out of the box' is a little different than what settles in after its been exposed to air for a while, and that makes it even better. Compared to L'occitane Cade and D.R. Harris Marlborough, this smells better, but I had not used it in some time as it did not appear to be as cushioning. A year later, and likely with the development of a more skilled hand on my part, I've began to use it again, and have gotten some very nice shaves from it with NO irritation, which is kind of a big deal for me. Top quality product, nicely packaged, lather's relatively easily. If your interested, purchase.

Used with plenty of hot water, a double edged razor, and a brush (up and down strokes are best) and you can expect the closest, most comfortable shave ever. The scent is manly but not macho, and is very light in any case after you wash it off, and you don't need to use aftershave either. Wonderful.
If you use a brush, make sure to get a good badger hair brush (expect to spend anywhere from twenty to forty dollars for a decent but inexpensive brush that will last a decade or more.) Make sure to also get a brush stand like the Nickel Shaving Brush Holder to keep water from seeping into the handle, which shortens the life of the brush.

(More customer reviews)I love this shaving cream. The smell is pleasant and subtle, and it lathers up easily with a good shaving brush. The lather is about the finest I've used in my time as a wet shaver. I bought a 1.75oz tube of it at Bath & Body Works at a local mall for $5. Used properly even a small tube will last for a good long while. I've been shaving with the one I have for upwards of two months.
A little history for you fine folks- C.O. Bigelow Shaving Cream is just a re-brand of Proraso, and Italian shaving cream. They're identical in smell, lather, performance and chemical composition.

Using a Merkur Heavy Duty safety razor, I experienced the very closest and comfortable shave ever with this exceptional shaving cream. I normally use an alcohol free after shave balm but felt no need for it after shaving with this cream as my skin felt very moisturized with no burn whatsoever. The best thing about this cream other than a great shave is its subtle and natural, invigorating smell. Though blessfully unscented, the pure lavender oil imparts a feeling of relaxation and luxury which makes shaving something I simply look forward to. Truly an amazing product which I recommend highly to anyone looking for the very best.

This is a very simple, straight forward product, so I will keep my review short and simple.
1. Lathers well
2. Soothes the skin, thank you Glycerine. No big ingredients list from the Col. thank you!
3. Smells very masculine, the Amber scent is a great blend that does not linger. Old school Barbershop smell, understated and not loud.
4. This is a great place to start if you are interested in old school shaving.
5. Inexpensive, and a great value, perfect step up from Williams Mug Soap. The next level.
6. A few of the old school guys on Badger & Blade keep this in rotation, so it goes from beginner to expert. It is in my rotation.
I would recommend this product to anyone interested in old school shaving routines, you can't really miss with the Colonel when you are looking for a great value shave soap.

It didn't fail me -- the soap smelled nice, though wasn't anything remarkable (if you want remarkable, see Col Conk), the brush was surprisingly good -- my eldest son confiscated mine. The mug is a classic that may one day hold coffee for me. Fun, inexpensive, and a great intro into the art of shaving with a mug and brush!

Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream Bowl, 5.3-Ounce Review

(More customer reviews)I've been looking for a cheaper alternative to Geo. F. Trumpers sandalwood shaving cream, which has become my gold standard. Taylor of Old Bond street was considerably cheaper, so I decided to give it a try.
The immediate difference I noticed was the strength and quality of the sandalwood fragrance. It's too highly scented for me, and neither is it as pleasant a scent as Trumpers. Whereas Trumpers leaves a hint of fragrance behind after a shave and a wipe-down with a wash-cloth, I find that Taylor leaves behind an "aftershave" level of fragrance, which is more than I prefer. Also, the scent is a sharper, more artificial smell that brings to my mind a dryer anti-static sheet, not something I'd want to smell like. I don't have any allergies to fragrances, so this is purely a preference thing, and I had no bad reactions to the scent.
It lathers up nicely. I dare say, slightly better than Trumpers. Taylor seems to be a drier formulation, but I had no trouble getting an appropriate amount on my badger-hair brush, and getting a good coating on my face.
It shaves well. I've had no problems getting a close shave with it.
However, whereas Trumpers seems to leave behind a bit of oils on my skin for a nice moisturizing effect, Taylor leaves my skin feeling drier. As I have naturally dry skin, Trumpers works better for me in this regard, but I can believe someone with oilier skin would appreciate Taylor's more soap-like effect.
It's a good product, and I would frankly probably switch to it for the cheaper price, but I really can't stand the heavier scent of it, unfortunately.

Burma Shaving Brush Review

(More customer reviews)The Burma shaving brush is often handed from old shaving pros to beginners as a starter brush. What that new shaver doesn't know, is that the pros only give out Burmas because they're dirt cheap.
Pros:
-The stiffness can be nice. The boar bristle used in the Burma is almost prickly, and you can really feel it digging into your pores to help clean your face. I'd almost consider using the brush for the exfoliation alone.
-CHEAP price, and the build quality is still fairly solid so it doesn't feel cheap.
Cons:
-It stinks, above and beyond the wet fur smell of any animal-hair brush.
-It's a little too stiff, and can be really unpleasant on your face.
-It doesn't hold water or lather very well.
...but it does get better, because the brush just needs a fairly involved break-in period before it truly blossoms. You'll need to expend some effort shampooing it out of the box, and then going through some lousy shaves. When you do finally break it in, it turns into an entirely usable brush.
Overall, I'd just spend the extra money and get a Tweezerman. A Tweezerman doesn't cost that much more, is made of much softer baddger hair, and the only negative out of the box is the same wet hair smell (though not nearly as bad as the Burma). A Tweezerman also doesn't need nearly the prep work that the Burma does. A Burma is a fine brush for gift baskets and and for the shaving aficianado looking to mix things up on the cheap, but there are much better brushes that don't cost that much more.
