As a once natural (now dyed) redhead I find it difficult to keep that vibrant, fresh out of the salon vibrant red that just wows. We bottle reds are unfortunate to have the most difficult color there is to hold on to. From my own personal experiences, experiments, mishaps, and research I have found that the ONLY real way you can keep that red between salon visits is to decrease the amount of washings and rinses, period. And when you do wash it, make sure you are using a high quality color safe shampoo and conditioner with COLD water. I use a color depositing shampoo and conditioner by L'oreal Professional and a weekly kerastase masque treatment for color sensitive hair. John Freida's color glaze is also a wonderful conditioning/shine treatment. All of this reddens up my white bath towels sometimes, but I bleach it all out.
It may sound gross, but my stylist sold me on the no washings dry shampoo routine, and that most of us don't need daily hair washings. And if you have dry ends like me, she's right. My hair is just now regaining its natural moisture that I lost due to regular washings and repeated colorings. My oily scalp and roots, however, is what caused me to over-wash my hair in the first place. That is where dry shampoo comes into play. Oddly enough, now that I wash my hair less frequently I find my scalp doesn't get as oily in general. My stylist said that my scalp was overproducing oil due to the daily washings and that the ph balance was whacked. Interesting, I thought.
In the past I used batiste dry shampoo, which is an excellent low cost dry shampoo for any hair color. I recommend it if this stuff is too expensive for you or if you just don't want to deal with something that has color in it. However, I hate the overwhelming aerosol smell that seems to hang in my bathroom for hours. I also found I had to use a lot more of it in order to absorb all the oil at the scalp, particularly behind my ears. Each spray doesn't seem to pack as much punch, for it never completely absorbed all the oil after a good sweaty workout. I With this, each spray seems to go a long way and I never have to cover an area more than once.
I find that this red is good for bright, true red-reds, light to medium, but because it is color depositing take precautions. You don't want to get this on your clothes or on your ears. It took me a few times to master the spray technique. Use this when you are naked or protected with a towel, and give it a good 5-10 minutes to completely dry before you rub this around your scalp. Many people get impatient and end up brushing red particles all over their shoulders. Wash your hands well. Then brush your hair out real good, several times, and even then you must be careful while putting your clothes on. But I find the process to be worth it, because my oily roots vanish completely and the red helps cover up new root growth.
It's costly (I buy the big can) and some really find this to be a pain to use, but after a few attempts I figured out how to use this in the best way for myself and I just love it.
