I recently started wet shaving (within the last two months) and have come to regard shaving as something I look forward to now. I use a Merkur Futura double-edged razor and have bought an assortment of different shaving creams to try, including Prorasso (italian eucalyptus stuff), Taylor of Bond Street (avocado) and the Truefitt & Hill Traflagar. My top choice is the Trufitt & Hill hands down.
While many people might see the $22 as expensive, most people need to realize that a very little goes a long way. This is not like the Edge Gel or Barbasol that you learned to shave with. This just requires a dab on the wet brush (a real badger hair brush) and a swirl in a small bowl sitting in a a bit of hot drawn water to create a warm and thick lather that will make you enjoy shaving again. I would estimate this jar will last about 6 months.
In looking at the cost of my new shave method (52 blades a year ($0.50 each), two jars of shaving cream a year ($22 each) comes to about $70 a year. Compare this to a blade every other week and a can of alcohol-based shave gel (which dries your skin) every other month for a cost of $60. Ten bucks more a year buys a much better shave.
I've noticed that my shaves take a bit longer, but my skin has cleared up of many of the bumps that I used to have. I also no longer have a 5 o'clock shadow at 3 in the afternoon. Best of all the shave is the closest thing I've ever had to the shave I got from a barber in Florence, Italy using a steady hand and a scary looking straight blade.
This is the best bet for a shave cream !
